Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual lymphatic drainage is a massage using light, rhythmic pressure, focused specifically on the lymphatic vessels. It is an anti-congestion therapy aimed at restoring disrupted lymphatic circulation. The lymphatic fluid needs to be guided in the correct direction by establishing new pathways for drainage.

As a result of MLD, the formation of lymphatic fluid increases: the wall of the lymphatic capillaries stretches, lymphatic motility is enhanced, and the volume of lymph moved per unit of time increases. Improved lymph flow increases the number of lymphocytes, which strengthens the body's defences.

The procedure is very relaxing. A gentle, specific draining technique is used to act on the superficial lymphatic vessels, through which 70% of the lymph flows. The technique follows the course of the lymphatic vessels and the direction of their physiological drainage. First, the large lymphatic basins are cleared, which then gradually draw lymph from the smaller vessels as well. As a result of these procedures, the lymphatic system is activated, swelling in the limb is noticeably reduced and the skin's turgor improves.
